David L. Dobbins

David L. Dobbins M.D. went home to his Savior on April 23, 2018. He was born in Corinth, Mississippi on January 12, 1941 to the late Elmer and Armada Arnett Dobbins. He completed degrees in electrical engineering at Mississippi State University in 1963 and 1964. In 1968 he earned his Ph.D. in electrical engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. David married Susan Sage in 1968 and worked as an analyst for the CIA for four years. He sold and designed computer systems from 1972-1975 for an Austin, Texas company. In 1977 he graduated from medical school in Juarez, Mexico. After a three-year residency in Family Practice in Lake Charles, Louisiana, David joined a Family Practice group of five physicians in Lake Charles, Louisiana. In 1993 he became director of Lake Charles Memorial Hospital's Wound Care Center, treating patients with non-healing wounds. David was on the Board of Directors of Memorial Hospital from 1985-2008. He served as a School Board member for Hamilton Christian Academy as well as sports physician for the basketball team. He was an active member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, serving as Elder from 1985 until 2013. His work in caring for the health needs of his church family was widely known and appreciated by all. On a multitude of occasions he graciously treated members, friends and neighbors in his home at no charge. He was particularly caring toward pastors, missionaries and friends. Having an insatiable desire for knowledge, David amassed a huge collection of books and hobbies. These interests through the years included such wide-ranging fields as theology, politics, gun collecting, photography, aviation, home building, ciphers, jewelry-making, genealogy and much more. A life-altering stroke caused his relocation to Tucson in 2013. He enjoyed the company of his son's family there, being known as Grandpa D. David leaves behind his wife Susan of 49 years, two married sons Justin and wife Teri, Adam and wife Cheryl, three grandchildren Lilly, Tyson and Kyle, a brother Richard Dobbins, a sister Judith Byrd, many nephews, nieces, friends, and innumerable patients and health care associates, some of whom affectionately called him Dr. D.
