Gary E. Briggs, 87, went home to be with the Lord on July 12, 2026. He was born October 18, 1938, in Corinth, Mississippi, to E.S. "Shirley" Briggs and Annie Kemp Briggs.
Gary graduated from Corinth High School and attended Mississippi State University before being drafted into the United States Army. He proudly served his country during the Vietnam War, and his patriotism remained an important part of his life. He continued serving his fellow veterans as a lifelong member and serving as a commander of the American Legion, and through his involvement with the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Following his military service, Gary became a well-known and highly respected businessman in Corinth. He wore many hats throughout his career and earned the respect of those around him through his determination and unmatched work ethic. He continued working until his health physically would not allow him to do so earlier this year.
Gary truly never met a stranger. Wherever he traveled, he seemed to know someone — and when he did not, it usually did not take long before he made a new friend. He loved listening to other people's stories and had a way of making everyone feel welcome. His relationships throughout Corinth and beyond reflected the respect he showed others and the lasting impression he made on everyone he met.
Family was at the center of Gary’s life. If someone he loved needed him, he was there. His home was the setting for countless family memories and always felt like the place everyone belonged. He took great pride in his family and loved watching the younger generations grow.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, E.S. "Shirley" and Annie Kemp Briggs; his sisters, Shirley Ann and June Annette; and his brothers, Wayne and Maury.
He is survived by his life partner, Brenda; his brother, Larry; his children, Rhonda (Keith (d)), Robin (Joe), and Eddie (Pam); his grandchildren, Jennifer (Alex), Joey (Chelsea), Drew (Nicole), Garrett (Cristen), Gayla, and Cade (Marlee Sue); his great-grandchildren, Lexi, Grady, Rhett, Henry, Emma, Teddy, Clay, Colten, Camille, Connar (Mackenzie), Ella, Willow and Annabelle; and his great-great-grandchildren, Adeline and Auden.
He is also survived by his bonus son, Michael Petty (Lindsey); bonus grandson, Avery; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and many friends, colleagues and members of the Corinth community whose lives were better because they knew him.
Gary lived a full life defined by hard work, service, friendship and family. He was a proud veteran, a respected businessman, a loyal friend and a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His absence will be deeply felt throughout Corinth and by the generations of family who were fortunate enough to call him theirs. A private memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Magnolia Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
