A Celebration of Life Service for James “ Reaphys” Bain, 91 of Glen, MS will be Tuesday, April 7, 2026 at 2:00 P M at Magnolia Funeral Home – East Chapel with interment to follow in Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 7, 2026 from 12:00 P M until service time at Magnolia Funeral Home – East. Bro. Mickey Trammel will officiate the service.
Mr. Bain passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 2, 2026, and went to his heavenly home. He was born June 29, 1934, to Luke Bain and Grace Baswell Bain.
Reaphys attended Glendale Elementary, completing third grade before discontinuing his education to help on the family homeplace. Luke, Grace, and their boys made a living at farming until the depression. Like many of his generation, he found steady work in Chicago. During his time ‘up north’ he was able to support himself, his parents and brothers, and ensure family property remained secure.
In 1958, Reaphys returned to Glen, married Dorothy M. Smith, and started a family of his own. Opportunities remained scarce so he moved his family to Memphis where they lived for a short time. Returning ‘home’ in 1963 he worked construction with Horton Brothers. Having learned to drive on a tractor, becoming skilled in operating heavy equipment was a natural progression. In 1972 he suffered a life changing accident that left him with a broken back, legs, and pelvis leading to his retirement from Horton Brothers. After months of therapy he returned to the workforce, eventually finding himself back on a tractor at Hillandale Country Club working as a grounds keeper, a job he loved because it kept him outside and on a tractor. After retiring from Hillandale, he worked with his brother in his machine shop, bushhogged, and bailed hay for himself and the public. As long as the task was outside, he was all in. That included his favorite pastimes of playing baseball, hunting, fishing, and golfing with family and friends.
Reaphys carried himself with a quite strength and valued others needs above his own. Reaphys was a lifelong member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church and will be laid to rest next to those he loved in the Liberty Hill Cemetery.
Reaphys is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Gail Tull and her husband Sam, Jr.; step grandsons Trey Tull and wife Maria, Tyler Tull and wife Breanne, seven great grands and four great-great grands, sister-in-law Nelda Bain, and a host of nieces, nephews. The family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation to the ladies at Country Cottage, the CenterWell and Gentiva therapist, caregivers, and nurses who all treated him with great care and respect.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Luke and Grace Bain, his brothers, Willie C. ‘Toby’ and wife Marie Bain, Garvin and wife Jessie Bain, Lindon Bain, and Ranney Bain.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the LeBonheur Children’s Hospital.
Magnolia Funeral Home has been honored to serve the family of Mr. James “Reaphys” Bain.
