Mr. Garrett, a husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many, was born November 3, 1947 in Corinth, MS to the late Arlin and Vana Ray Garrett. He left for his Heavenly home on Tuesday, August 5, 2025.
Joe graduated from Kossuth High School then attended Northeast, where he played basketball. He was a graduate of Mississippi State University where he majored in Agriculture. He returned to Kossuth High School where he taught Agriculture. After ten years in education, Joe went into the insurance business. He enjoyed serving his customers of 45 years as an agent with Farm Bureau Insurance Company.
Joe was a member of Booneville Church of Christ where he served as a song director. Joe had many interests, but his love of Bluegrass music was apparent by everyone who knew him. He founded the band Hatchie Bottom Boys in the early 80s and played for thousands of people over the years. Next to family time and gardening, playing bluegrass music was his favorite thing to do.
Joe was welcomed home by his parents and his brother, Bob Garrett. He leaves behind his greatest love, his family. His wife of 33 years is Linda Garrett. Joe was father to two daughters, Lisa Essary (Tracy) and Mandy Scales (Christian). He had two stepchildren, Todd Murphy (Phyllis) and Jill Tays (Chris). His grandchildren are Lacy Lindsey (Cory), TJ Essary (Kylee), Gabe Scales, Ansley Scales, Amelia Scales, Matt Murphy (Madison), Meredith Bronson (Jerod), Bret Schnabl (Jadyn), Anna Grace Schnabl (Ben), and Eli Tays. He also had six great grandchildren, Josie, Jett, Poppy, Rigby, Jordy and Jameson as well as a host of cousins with whom he loved to spend time with traveling and just getting together to eat and laugh.
Anyone who knew Joe can say he was a man who loved the Lord, his family and made a friend with just about everyone he ever met. He will be greatly missed by all.
