Martha Nell Burcham, age 84, passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2026, in Iuka, Mississippi. She was born on September 13, 1941, in Benton, Kentucky, to the late Esther Searcy Burcham and Harvey Ray Burcham, formerly of Burnsville, Mississippi. Martha graduated from Ballard Memorial High School in 1960 and went on to become a licensed beautician, spending many years serving clients throughout Ballard County, Kentucky. After graduating high school, she married Glenn Thomas Bumpous, and together they welcomed a daughter, Teresa Bumpous, now Teresa McGaughy. Martha found great joy while tending to her flowers and plants. A gifted and creative woman, she enjoyed painting, drawing, and crafting handmade dolls. Her artistic talents and appreciation for beauty were evident in all she created. More than anything, Martha cherished her family. Her eyes would light up at the sight of loved ones walking through the door, and her voice was always warm and cheerful when answering the phone. She loved deeply and made those around her feel treasured. As a grandmother, Martha's love knew no bounds. Some of her happiest moments were spent with her grandchildren, whether she was cheering from the sidelines at ball games, enjoying warm summer days filled with swimming and picnics, or sharing quiet afternoons of books, crafts, and creativity. She delighted in reading stories, making crafts, and encouraging imagination, helping to foster in her grandchildren a lifelong love of learning and reading that remains one of her most cherished legacies. In retirement, Martha devoted countless hours to preserving the history and heritage of Tishomingo County through her volunteer work with the Old Courthouse Museum and the genealogy research library in Iuka. A passionate genealogist, she helped countless individuals trace their family histories and took great pride in researching her own family's roots, which she traced back to Ireland. She was an active member of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and remained deeply committed to preserving local history for future generations. Martha possessed an enduring curiosity about the world and a spirit of adventure. During her early retirement years, she spent many happy seasons traveling across the United States in an RV, exploring new places and creating lasting memories. She was especially drawn to the mountains, where she found both peace and inspiration. She will be remembered for her intelligence, determination, generosity, and unwavering dedication to her family, her community, and the preservation of history. Her legacy lives on in the stories she preserved, the people she helped, and the family she loved so dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, Esther Searcy Burcham and Harvey Ray Burcham; her brothers, Harold Burcham and James Burcham; and her sister, Sarah Margaret Alexander. She is survived by her daughter, Teresa McGaughy; her grandchildren, Jason Bumpous, David Bartlett, Daniel Giles, Stephanie Rainey, and Esther Giles; eight great-grandchildren; and her brother, Ronnie Burcham. As she closed her eyes here on earth and opened them in Heaven, those who loved her can almost hear her familiar words one last time: "Sand in the left eye, sand in the right eye, shed a tear and there's mud in your eye."
