Willie Mae Mathis Sargent, 86, of Corinth, MS passed away in the early morning hours of April 12, 2021 in Huntsville, AL surrounded by her family. Visitation will be Thursday, April 15, 2021 from 12pm-2pm at Magnolia Funeral Home – South Chapel. Funeral service will be Thursday, April 15, 2021 at 2pm at Magnolia Funeral Home – South Chapel with Rev. Nelson Hight. Interment will be in Magnolia Gardens.
She was born June 15, 1934 in Kossuth, MS, where she grew up and attended Kossuth High School. She graduated valedictorian of her graduating class in 1954. She and her late husband, Alton Sargent, owned and ran Sargent’s Cafeteria, where she became known for her superb cooking. Willie Mae was a prominent face at National Bank of Commerce which later became Trustmark Bank, and after more than 40 years of dedicated service, she retired as branch manager of the Shiloh Road branch. After her retirement, she worked for several years for Dr. Sweat. A member of the Corinth Housing Authority and a devoted attendee of the Church of the Crossroads, Willie Mae was very well known and well-loved in the community. She was fiercely devoted to her family, and her favorite pastimes were tending to her flower garden and cooking delicious meals.
Willie Mae is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Ann Sargent Claxton of Corinth; son, Keith Alton Sargent (Steve) of Huntsville, AL; granddaughter, Ilyssa Megan Claxton of Hattiesburg, MS; brother, Philip Mathis (Bonnie) of Kossuth; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Alton J, Sargent; parents, Rev. Willie Matthew Mathis and Annie Mae Hodum Mathis and two brothers, Cleabert Mathis and J.D. Mathis.
